In-situ TEM irradiation creep experiment revealing radiation induced dislocation glide in pure copper

نویسندگان

چکیده

In-situ TEM straining experiments were performed on pure copper to investigate the dislocation activity under heavy ion irradiation and high applied stress levels. The unpinning of dislocations from defects followed by glide was observed at levels just below critical for without irradiation. This phenomenon, unraveled first time in copper, has been statistically analyzed using digital image processing. Quantitative analysis pinning lifetimes performed, suggesting that a cascade related mechanism is operative explain radiation induced glide. work provides new insights creep deformation level.

Dislocation Creep: Climb and Glide in the Lattice Continuum

A continuum theory for high temperature creep of polycrystalline solids is developed. It includes the relevant deformation mechanisms for diffusional and dislocation creep: elasticity with eigenstrains resulting from vacancy diffusion, dislocation climb and glide, and the lattice growth/loss at the boundaries enabled by diffusion. All the deformation mechanisms are described with respect to the...

In-situ TEM Study of Dislocation-Interface Interactions

In this chapter, we highlighted the in situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation of the interactions of dislocations with three types of interfaces: (i) twin boundaries in Cu; (ii) metallic interphase boundaries; and (iii) metal/ceramic interfaces. Interface structures, interface properties, and dislocation-interface interactions are characterized in a high-resolution TEM. These k...

In Situ TEM Multi-Beam Ion Irradiation as a Technique for Elucidating Synergistic Radiation Effects

Materials designed for nuclear reactors undergo microstructural changes resulting from a combination of several environmental factors, including neutron irradiation damage, gas accumulation and elevated temperatures. Typical ion beam irradiation experiments designed for simulating a neutron irradiation environment involve irradiating the sample with a single ion beam and subsequent characteriza...

Radiation Effects in Metals: Void Swelling and Irradiation Creep

Until about 1967 the most detrimental radiation effect expected to be suffered by the stainless-steel cladding of the fuel elements of the projected liquid-metal-cooled fast breeder reactor (LMFBR) was embrittlement due to exces sive hardening at low temperatures or helium agglornrration at grain boundaries at high temperatures, These problems, however, were at least qualitatively understood, ...

In situ TEM of radiation effects in complex ceramics.

In situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has been extensively applied to study radiation effects in a wide variety of materials, such as metals, ceramics and semiconductors and is an indispensable tool in obtaining a fundamental understanding of energetic beam-matter interactions, damage events, and materials' behavior under intense radiation environments. In this article, in situ TEM obs...
